Jumaadi received his BFA in Painting at the National Art School, Sydney in 2000 and a MFA in 2008. Jumaadi works across a range of mediums, including drawing, painting, installation and performance.
Jumaadi works fluidly across a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, performance and installation.His practice is informed by personal experience as well as the political and aesthetic lineages of his home-land, including wayang kulit, a tradition of shadow-puppet plays that originated in Java and Bali. With a poeticsensibility and subtle symbolism, Jumaadi weaves together a personal iconography of human and organicmotifs to explore universal themes such as love, conflict and belonging.
Jumaadi has exhibited and performed his work in Australia and internationally, including 34 solo exhibitions,such as the Jakarta Biennale 2011, Moscow Biennale 2013, the Halsey institute of Contemporary Art, SC,USA, 2014, SEA Focus, Gillman Barracks, Singapore, 2019 and 2023, the National at Campbelltown ArtsCentre in 2023, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2016 and 2024, the Art Gallery of New SouthWales and Museum Macan, Jakarta. In 2021 he represented Australia at the Gwangju Biennale in South Ko-rea and was an exhibition artist at the Asia Pacific Triennale 10 in Brisbane.
His work is featured in numerous public collections both across Australia and internationally, namely the ArtGallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Bathurst Regional Gallery, Bega Valley Region-al Art Gallery, Halsey Institute South Carolina, USA, Macquarie Bank, National Art School, Sydney, NationalGallery of Australia, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
Jumaadi currently lives and works in Sydney, New South Wales and Imogiri, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
